Everybody aims to have a better smile, and what better way to get a beautiful, pearly white smile than whitening?

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is probably the most common dental cosmetic procedure, where the teeth are treated in a special way to remove the layers of colors and stains, and giving them a very white and bright appearance.

Who could benefit from teeth whitening?

Anybody whose teeth became more yellow or darker with time is a candidate to undergo the whitening procedure. People who have been smoking for years, or have a higher than average consumption of tea, coffee and other foods and drinks that contain a high amount of stains will probably notice their teeth darkening with time, and to restore their original color, teeth whitening is recommended.

What are the types of teeth whitening available?

There are 3 main types of teeth whitening:
  • Chemical whitening: This procedure is done by placing the whitening gel on the teeth, and activating it by adding another chemical gel.
  • Blue light whitening: This is the most common type used. It involves activating the whitening gel by subjecting it to a blue light source.
  • Laser whitening: This is done by activating the whitening gel by exposing it to a laser source of specific wavelength.

Which type of Dental Bleaching in Coppell is best?

Each type has some advantages and some drawbacks. Chemical whitening is the safest, with least side effects and virtually no sensitivity, but is less potent than the other types and is capable of giving a maximum of 4 shades lighter. Laser bleaching is by far the strongest and fastest, but is very aggressive and a lot of sensitivity is expected. Light bleaching is the best of both worlds. It gives amazing results (up to 8 shades whiter) while having average sensitivity and side effects, and these could be easily remedied.

How is the procedure of  done?

The first step is a normal cleaning procedure, removing all plaque and calculus from your teeth in preparation to receive the whitening gel. The gums and other soft tissues are then properly isolated using gauze, cotton and a protective gel so that the whitening gel does not cause burns and ulcers.

Next, the whitening gel is applied to the teeth, and activated in one of the 3 ways mentioned above. This step is repeated 3 or 4 times until the teeth become 4 to 10 shades whiter, depending on the technique used.

Finally, a Fluoride gel is applied to the teeth to protect them and give them a shield against sensitivity.

What should I expect afterwards?

A bit of sensitivity is expected, since the outermost layer that contains all the stains has been removed, and the inner layers are now exposed. It is advisable to begin a high Fluoride hygiene regimen about 10 days before the procedure, and continue for a couple of weeks after the procedure, by using a high Fluoride containing tooth paste and Fluoridated mouth wash. This would minimize the sensitivity after the procedure and protect your teeth from harm. Some of the whitening gel might accidentally have come in contact with the gums, causing minor chemical burns. These will disappear with time and only need a protective gel to be placed to fasten the healing.

Finally, you should refrain from smoking, coffee, tea and all other staining foods and drinks for at least a couple of days afterwards.

How long does the effect last?

A very good question, and unfortunately very difficult to answer. It all depends on your consumption of staining foods and drinks. If you are a regular coffee drinker, you should expect the effect to last at least a few years, but if you consume high amounts of coffee, the period is considerably less.

One thing to note though, however much coffee, tea and other staining foods and drinks you consume, your teeth would never go back to the color and shade they were on before the bleaching process, and you should expect to have a bright smile for quite some time.
