What are implants made of?
Traditional dental implants are made of Titanium, which is a light, inert, biocompatible material that urges the bone to form for its fixation. Recently, Zirconium implants were introduced and have a lot of success, but they are still in their trial phase.
As for structure, all implants are composed of 2 parts:
- Fixture: Which is the screw placed inside the bone, that anchors the restoration in the mouth.
- Abutment: Which is the part sticking out of the gums, that holds the crown or denture that appears in the mouth.
What are the steps of Dental Implant Procedure in Coppell
Contrary to popular belief, the process of getting an implant could not be easier, and even more so nowadays with the advancement in technology and computers being used in almost all aspects of the procedure.
The first step is accurate diagnosis and planning. A number of xrays are used to determine the amount and quality of bone that you have, so the proper implant size and shape could be selected.
After selection, the procedure consists of 2 main steps:
- Surgical step: This is where the screw is placed inside the bone. After numbing the area, an incision is made so that the bone becomes visible (nowadays even that step is not needed more often than not). A series of drills of increasing sizes are used to drill a tiny hole in the bone, the same size as the implant that was selected. The implant is then wrenched into the bone, and sutures are used to close the surgical site, which are removed about a week later. Expect a minimum amount of pain and swelling that could be easily remedied with some painkillers and cold compresses.
- Prosthetic phase: A waiting period of 4 to 6 months is expected (that’s how long it takes for new bone to form around the implant screw, making it a part of your jaw). After the implant successfully anchors in the bone, a few molds are taken so that the final restoration (either fixed or removable).
What types of restorations could be placed over implants?
That is where the beauty of implant dentistry in Coppell lies. They give an option to almost every case. Anybody who has lost a tooth or more, who has strong or weak bone, and even those who have lost all their teeth could all benefit from the following options:
Implant crowns
The traditional restoration over implants. This is used when a single tooth is lost, and a single implant and crown are used as replacements.
Implant fixed bridge
When the patient loses more than one tooth, then 2 or more implants are placed in the bones, and a bridge is used to span the gap, similar to traditional bridges except that it rests on implants rather than natural teeth.
Implant Over Dentures
This type of restoration is unknown to most people. It is designed mainly for people who have lost all their teeth, and are uncomfortable with the idea of dentures, but still could not afford to have an entire mouth rehabilitation with implants. In this case, only 2 or 4 implants are placed, and a removable denture is fabricated to fit over the implants, attaching itself to them with buttons. This makes the denture more fitting, less wobbly, and the overall situation much more comfortable.
All on 4
A fairly new concept, but one that has been getting a lot of attention. Traditionally, if the patient has lost all of their teeth, 8 implants would be needed for replacement in the upper arch, and 6 in the lower, with a bridge that replaces all the teeth. With the all on 4 concept, special implants placed in a special way are used, so that only 4 in the upper arch and 4 in the lower arch are needed, saving time, money and having overall less surgery.
